Our printed umbrellas are great because we can replicate most things. Send us the artwork and let us know what you’re interested in having printed, whether it be fine art, photos, or metallics.

If you’re not used to printing anything but your office printer, submitting artwork for umbrella printing can be difficult to get the hang of. Before you start the design phase, make sure you understand the requirements and the jargon because printing on other surfaces isn’t the same as printing on paper. We can assist you if you’re interested in knowing the specifics behind the jargon, even though it might not be your responsibility to comprehend how we print umbrellas.

What is umbrella artwork?

Your logo or the design you want on your umbrella is referred to as umbrella artwork. In the past, you may have thought of artwork as something you see on a gallery wall. Usually, Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop is used for creation, and a specific file type (such as a PSD or AI file) is saved after. The artwork will have been precisely colored to fit your brand identity or design before being accurately matched against the Pantone color matching system. Get our free Pantone reference tool here.

With which program should I make the artwork for the umbrella?

Typically, Corel Draw, Photoshop, or Adobe Illustrator are used to create artwork. Your artwork’s designer most likely saved it as a PDF that you can open and view if you don’t have this software. If you’re doing it internally, you’ll either need to buy this software or hire someone to do it for you. That is something we can accomplish! Contact us if you require assistance.

How should the artwork appear?

After creating your artwork, make sure to enlarge every object and save it as a copy or vector EPS file. Next, reopen it on a different computer to make sure the font and clear lines look as you intended (i.e., as you created it). Illustrator will replace any missing fonts, so if your artwork is not saved correctly or the computer you are opening it on does not have the necessary fonts, Illustrator will mess it up. In order for us to receive your artwork as you would like it to be printed on your umbrella, please send us the fonts along with it or make sure they are outlined.

Organizing your artwork in layers

To make the colors easily distinguishable, make sure each one is on a separate layer. This keeps things clear and guarantees that the artwork is printed the way you want it.

arranging items in groups in your artwork

Combine items of the same color to ensure that no detail—not even the tiniest one—is overlooked when they are clicked on.

Pantone citations

Assign a Pantone reference to every layer to ensure accurate interpretation of the artwork. The Pantone Coated (C) universal matching system is used by us when printing. Visit The Bag Workshop, our sister site, for a free color chart.

intricate artwork

Umbrellas are printed both digitally and by screen. Remember that screen printing is difficult for very small fonts, hairlines, and gradients/shading. We will digitally print your artwork if it has extremely fine detail.

File formats for artwork

Vector and non-vector files will be discussed. An artwork produced with a formula instead of colored blocks or pixels is called a vector graphic. EPS, AI, and PDF are examples of vector file types (PDFs are typically vector files, but this varies depending on how they are saved and whether the layers have been flattened and kept).

You can resize vector files to fit your needs. An image stored in a vector file can be enlarged to any size without sacrificing its sharpness or resolution.

Artwork is typically created as a vector and then resized to something much smaller so it can be sent by email easily because vector files are fairly large when they are created. A non-vector file: what is it?

Non-vector images, also referred to as raster images, such as JPEGs, GIFs, and PNGs, are composed of a set quantity of colored pixels. Because of their low resolution and inability to enlarge without losing artwork sharpness, these files are not ideal for printing because they appear pixelated. These are the kinds of pictures you typically find online.

Simply super-zoom in to your umbrella artwork to check if any non-straight lines or curved shapes stay at the same resolution (vector image) or appear pixelated (non-vector image) if you’re not sure if it’s vectorized.

Resolution of artwork for printed umbrellas

Artwork for umbrellas should be saved at the dimensions necessary for printing. To ensure accurate printing on an umbrella, save your artwork at a resolution of 300 dpi. This is crucial because you can scale artwork up but not down. The model of umbrella you’re interested in, or its specification sheet, should have information about the size of your umbrella panel. Please contact us if you are unable to locate it, and we will be happy to assist you.

Bleed for umbrella artwork

Bleeding is not necessary if you are printing a logo that takes up the center of an umbrella panel. A piece of artwork should bleed if it is printed to cover an entire panel or panels of an umbrella. This means that instead of printing eight separate images, we print the entire panel plus a little extra, so that when the panels are stitched together and matched at the seams, they form a continuous artwork.

Sending your artwork

Sending high-resolution artwork by email might be more effective if you use WeTransfer. Large files may be sent through our email server, but if it’s a high resolution file, it may not be able to be sent through yours. That may also assist you in deciding if it is suitable for printing. A file that is only 5 KB in size is probably not going to print well.

This should give you a better understanding of the artwork needed to print umbrellas. Please contact us if you have any questions; we would be pleased to help. If you would prefer, we can provide you with a quote via email or over the phone. With over ten years of experience in umbrella manufacturing, we are a UK-based company with our headquarters in Bath.

We can create illustrations of what your umbrella might look like before moving on to sample and expeditiously processing your order. Fortunately, we have a graphic designer on staff who can assist with redrawing logos, creating artwork, or creating mock-ups of images that you can review and present to your supervisor or team for approval. Therefore, one of our team members can assist you if you don’t have a graphic designer or agency that works with you.
